6 Unique Things You Could Only Find In Bali

If this is not your first time visiting mayrealm.com, then you probably already knew that I’m a Balinese. If this is your first time, then now you know that I’m a Balinese LoL. Being a Balinese is really normal for me, however, for a foreigner it might be a good and unique experience. Here are my 6 unique things you could only find in Bali.

Find pork easily

Let’s start with food! If you ever came to Indonesia before but not in Bali, especially in Java. You might be thinking why it is hard to find a place that serve pork. The answer is because the majority of people in Java is Muslim, and pork is forbidden for Muslim to eat.

Meanwhile, the majority of people in Bali is Hindu which is ok to eat pork. Furthermore, in Bali, there is a special pork menu called “Babi Guling”. Basically, it is a roasted pig or suckling pig with various other food i.e vegetable from a banana tree called “ares“, satay, and lawar (various vegetables with coconut.

During Galungan and Kuningan, Balinese usually eat pig more during this ceremony. But you can find babiguling easily every day. If you are based in Canggu there are plenty of good places to eat babiguling e.g. Babi Guling Men Agus or Babi Guling Men Lari.

Those two places are near each other and on the side of the road, so you can find them easily. The most important thing in babiguling is the pig’s skin that should be crispy.

Different food price

Ok still about food, after you find a good place to eat babi guling and you eat there with your friends. If it’s your first time to come to Bali, there is a high chance that you will get rip-off. It is the same with the taxi at the airport, sometime they charge an insane amount of money for their service.

Usually, in Bali or in a tourism area they have a different price for a local and a foreigner. This is always happen everytime I eat with my foreigner friends, they give us a different menu. I still remember, when we were in West Bali they charge a plain rice for Rp10.000 which is insane.

They think I’m a guide and my friends are my customer, sometimes I can ask them to give a local price but sometimes they will charge the same price for a foreigner even though I’m a local. As a foreigner, you can’t avoid this kind of thing unless you go to a local place or warung (small place to eat).

Moreover, you might check my other post about tips before you come to Bali. I also explained some useful words to use for shopping.

Offering

Canang
offering (canang)

As a Balinese, we believe in god his manifestation. Everyday, we put an offering in a certain places in our house. You might see the offering if you stay at a guest house owned by a local Bainese. Usually, we do every morning every day.

If you stumbled upon a newly put offering, if possible just let it be. Otherwise, just put it aside if it blocks your way or if it’s on your scooter for example. The purpose we put an offering is to protect our place or ourselves. I already explained about offering on another post, you might find it here

We have many religious ceremonies

The Harmony with God

As we believe in God, we do have many ceremonies, at least once a month. Every full moon we have a ceremony, which means at least once a month. Also, we have many Gods and pretty much for everything. For example, we have Saraswati which is a ceremony for knowledge. Galungan and Kuningan are every 6 months, Nyepi or silence day is every year, plus many more ceremonies.

Furthermore, every Temple has their own ceremony time, usually depending on the full moon. So if you stay long enough time in Bali, I’m sure you will see many different ceremony. Not only ceremony for the Gods, there is ceremony for people as well e.g. Ngaben (cremation), wedding ceremony, mesangih (maturity ceremony).

Rice paddy field

Jatiluwih terraced rice fields

Well, I have to mention this as well. You might find it on other place, but the unique thing about rice paddy field in Bali the irrigation system and the terrace. You probably already knew that Jatiluwih is one of the World Herritage by UNESCO in Bali.

Not only in Jatiluwih, in Canggu also you could find plenty of rice fields even on the side of the road. Every day, I pass through a road with a rice paddy field on the right and left side of the road.

The other unique thing about Balinese rice field is the planting timing. It is different from one paddy field to the other. You might see this often if you come to Bali, on the right side of the road the farmers already planting their paddy, however, on the left side of the road probably not yet. You only could find this unique thing in Bali.

Beer Bintang

beer bintang

Ok this is the last thing that I could think of for today, beer Bintang. If you ever drunk an alcohol in Bali, Bintang is one of the famous local beer brand that you could easily find in Bali. I’m not sure about the taste if you compare it to European or American beer though.

Also another thing about alcohol, the price is usually higher compare to Europe or The US. Because we imported all of them, so the price is higher. That’s why jus drink Bintang and enjoy the sunset for a cheap price! Usually, the price is around 35k rupiah for a small Bintang in a cafe or bar.

Also, usually they have an happy hour so the price is cheaper by that time. if you go to a smaller places, you might find Bintang small for 25k or even 20k. I personally like the radler with a lemon taste instead the normal one. Moreover, if you drink your beer in the beach, usually there are women that will collect the bottle.

Those are my 6 unique things you could only find in Bali, of course those are my version and if you have your unique things that you found in Bali other than my list, don’t hesitate to put it on the comment!
